You have books, CDs, DVDs and online guitar membership sites: these are the usual ways for people to learn to play guitar online, although you occasionally find personal tuition advertised by one or other of the national franchises.

The question is, is it possible to learn heavy metal guitar online, or do you simply learn how to play guitar, and then adapt what you have learned into the heavy metal genre? The answer is a bit of both. A guitar beginner won't just start right off learning how to play heavy metal. It might be possible to do so, but you would suffer because of it, and here's why.

You have to get to know your guitar before trying to get any sound out of it. A good beginners course of guitar lessons will first show you each part of your guitar, such as the body, the soundboard, the neck, the strings and so on - even as far as the eyelets the strings are tied to, because these can also affect the sound. There are certain adjustments that can be made to your guitar that can change the sound, and the way you string it can be critical.

The positioning of the pick-ups, and even the type and make of pick-up, has a bearing on what sort of sound you get, and for a heavy metal player the pick-ups are very important, as is the choice of strings. These are all aspects of your guitar that you should be taught as you go along - and at the appropriate time, since much of it would be meaningless until you were in a position to understand the differences.

Before you start thinking you are Tony Iommi or Slash, you first have to learn how to hold your guitar, and then how to strum properly. Then you have to get your fret fingering right, pick up a few chords and get started on some fingerpicking. Before you can really start playing solos, you have to master some scales, particularly the pentatonics that are the basis behind most of the great licks you have heard. Most are simply pentatonic scales played up, and down the frets, perhaps with a few harmonics and chords thrown in.

Very few people learn heavy metal just by picking up a guitar and starting to play. Some do, but at some time in their career they have to learn the proper techniques or they will never get past ordinary. You need tuition for that. Or the time to stand and watch great guitarists doing their stuff and trying to copy how they do it. Far quicker to take an online guitar course!

So, your heavy metal guitar lessons online should start with a beginners guitar course, and then you should move on to intermediate. Once you can play your instrument reasonably well, and are familiar with several chords and some scales, you are ready to look at a specific genre: in your case heavy metal.

Online heavy metal lessons will teach you how to get the right sound, and also the various techniques required to enable you to increase your playing speed. You will learn hammer ons that allow you to play more that one note with a single pick of a string, and various other techniques such as vibrato and spider walking around the frets, that not only helps with the flexibility and strength of your fingers, but also enables you to play single notes pretty fast.

The most useful tool for you, however, is the pentatonic scale. Consisting of just five notes, pentatonic scales will enable you to play some good-sounding licks on your guitar, but they take some practice. When you are playing heavy metal, and are into a fast lick, you don't have time to think of the individual notes. You will be playing virtually on autopilot, and will simply be benefiting from and repeating all these hours you spent on your pentatonics.

That is all that most guitar licks are: scales played around the frets, and up and down the neck. Because they are scales, everything stays in tune, which is why they sound so good. Without proper guitar tuition you would find it very difficult to achieve, and would be nothing but one of the "might have beens" that thought they were too good for formal guitar lessons. There is nobody too good for lessons, and every single player out there can benefit from a few lessons, even if just to brush up on their skills and technique.

That is why an online guitar membership site is such a great choice for heavy metal guitar lessons. You can take the beginners courses and then move on to the heavy metal guitar course. Even when you are an adept, you can come back and practice your skills with a few advanced lessons, and perhaps take part in the forum and chat to some of your old friends.

There is no doubt that if you take heavy metal guitar lessons online, you will have a better chance than most of becoming a very good guitar player, and the membership will allow you visit as often and for as long as you like, and try out any of the many courses or teachers available to you on the website.

Heavy metal guitar lessons are best provided through a guitar membership site such as http://www.jamplaynow.com where you will learn the basic and most advanced heavy metal techniques at the rate best suited to you.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Andre_Sanchez

Guitar Lessons

Guitar Lessons - Playing Harmonics

A harmonic is a tone that’s created by the guitar by touching the string above a fret on an open vibrating string. There are 2 types of harmonics Natural and Artificial or I prefer to call them pinch harmonics.

Natural Harmonics

Natural Harmonics can be produced by touching your index finger on your fret-hand above at the 5th, 7th or 12th fret. Just place your finger on the string above the fret, don’t press to hard or you will mute the note, pluck the note and then pull your finger off. Try it on the A string.

E|------------|

B|------------|

G|------------|

D|------------|

A|----12------|

E|------------|

Timing is critical when playing harmonics. The length of time you keep your finger on the string will determine if you hear a harmonic, muted sound or just a regular note. Natural harmonics occur in various locations along the fretboard. The most common ones are on the 5th, 7th, and 12th fret. The harmonics in those positions will ring for all 6 strings on the same fret. Try playing them in all 3 positions. Place your finger across all 6 strings and play from the Low E to the high E lifting your finger as your pick strikes each individual string. You have to work at this and it takes some time, but it sound so cool.

E|---------5-----|--------7-----|----------12---|

B|--------5------|-------7------|--------12-----|

G|-------5-------|------7-------|-------12------|

D|------5--------|-----7--------|------12-------|

A|-----5---------|----7---------|-----12--------|

E|----5----------|---7----------|----12---------|

Pinch Harmonics

Pinch harmonics are done with the pick hand hand. I found this technique very difficult to master. The best method is to “choke” down on your pick so there is very little pick exposed between your thumb and your index finger. With time you’ll learn the pick has to be mobile in your hand, and you will move it into different position depending on how you play. Now when you pluck a string with your pick the trick is to hit the pick first and then slightly twist your thumb so that it touches the string immediately after hitting the string.

Why play a pinch harmonic…..well because they are very cool when playing solos. You can combine string bends with pinch harmonics and vibrato to get totally cool sounding “squeals”. They even sound great when you do them by accident. The trick is to devote some of your practice time everyday to just playing cool licks and try adding a pinch harmonic with some demonic vibrato. Oh yea, it makes you want to play more guitar because you can just create some of coolest sounds!

Bill McRea is the publisher of The Guitar Warehouse and Guitar Playing Techniques. This technique is important because it allows for nuances in tone and expression, and it allows the picking hand a “break” since it does not have to pick the notes on the hammer-on or the pull-off. This results in a faster progression of notes, sometimes called licks.

The hammer-on is accomplished when you pick a note and then using another finger hammer down on the same string. The sound of the hammered note is less pronounced than the picked note. For example place your first finger on the 5th fret of the 3rd string, and the hammer down your third finger on the 7th fret of the 3rd string. Don’t use your just quickly strike the second fret position with the tip of your 3rd finger. This would be described in guitar tab as 5h7 or 5 hammer 7. Keep your first finger on the 5th fret because you are going to pull-off of the 7th fret in the next example.

The pull-off results when you release a plucked note with enough force such that the second fretted note rings. This may require a slight side way motion to create enough friction to cause the string to ring out. The sound of the pulled-off note is less pronounced since you aren't using your pick to create it. This would be illustrated in guitar tab 7p5 or 7 pull 5.

If you combine these techniques you can create very fast note runs or licks. Imagine how this sequence of hammer-on, pull-off’s would sound when played very quickly 5h7p5h7p5. In deed the hammer-on, pull-off technique is the cornerstone for legato and most speed playing techniques.

It takes time to perfect the technique but it is worth the effort.

Bill McRea is the publisher of http://www.guitarwarehouse.com and their blog at

Also http://www.kansasfans.com and http://diabetes-at-home.blogspot.com/

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Bill_McRea

Guitar Lessons

Guitar Lessons - Guitar Vibrato

Playing a guitar without vibrato is like eating Mexican food without salsa. Vibrato is one of the most definitive techniques in defining your musical style, your own personal unique sound. No two players have the same vibrato sound. Some play slow and wide while others play narrow and fast, and that's the beauty behind spending a lot of time learning different vibrato techniques. It's like eating different salsa's every time you go to your favorite taco stand. Enough talk about food, lets talk technique.

Vibrato is sometimes confused with tremolo. Basically it is just a technique of vibrating the string sharp and flat around a root note. For example if you are playing the 7th fret on the 3rd string with your 3rd finger on your fret hand you can just push the note up slightly and them pull it down slightly. Do this in quick succession so the over riding effect is a "wobbly" tone around the root note you are playing. Use your hand, wrist, and arm to make the movements. Never just wiggle a finger. Some people use a technique of pulling the string down towards the floor and then releasing back up.

Try this in a variety of speeds and levels of bending during your vibrato. The trick is to be consistent and smooth with your motion. If you are playing a slow blues riff then you may want to slow down and make a wide circular motion with the string, or if you are playing a fast rock lick you may just ad a fast narrow vibrato to accent the final note in a run.

It is possible to add vibrato using any finger you play with, but it is most commonly done with the first and third finger on the fret hand. Using your first finger is a bit trickier. I usually use my first finger for fast vibratos similar to BB Kings style. I will literally lift my other finger far off the fret board, press down and just "vibrate" the string as fast and as open as possible. That's funny the work vibrato is a lot like vibrate, because that's actually what you are doing vibrating the string.

When you combine vibrato with string bending, harmonics and legato techniques you begin to discover the musician inside of you. Playing guitar is about discovering your inner flow of creativity and having the techniques to be able to express them. Vibrato is one of the more personal and effective techniques. As with all aspect of playing guitar you need to experiment with these techniques, and most of all have fun!

Bill McRea is the publisher of Guitar Warehouse the best place to Buy Guitar and learn Guitar Playing Techniques Both sites offer free lesson and product sales.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Bill_McRea

Guitar Lessons

Guitar Lessons - String Bending

Bending strings is used to give the guitar a more personalized and harmonic quality. The technique is used mostly by lead guitar players but is also applied in all styles of playing. String bending and vibrato techniques are two large components in making up a guitar player’s style. The combination of these skills more or less defines a considerable part of what makes your playing different than the next guy.

Bending the strings far enough to reach a desired pitch is the goal. One of the keys is to use three fingers to bend the string, instead of just one finger. Use your third finger on the fret you're bending and place your first and second fingers on the frets behind it, and use the strength of all three fingers when you do a bend.

Fret the note on the 7th fret of the third string with your third finger. Your other finger should follow on the 6th and 5th fret. Our goal is to bend this note up one step (the equivalent of two frets) and then release the note to its original pitch. Before you do your first bend hit the note on the 9th fret, this will be your reference note. When you do your bend the goal is to make the tone of your bend “reach” the tone of the reference note. Repeat: hit your reference note, then immediately jump to the correct position and play a bend until to can consistently match the reference note.

The length you hold the bend, how quickly you release it and any vibrato you add to the bend will define a large part of playing your style. It’s good to just have fun and try doing a number of bends and releases to hear all the different sounds you can generate. Try bending the note before you strike it so you just hear the release, or try using a wide or narrow vibrato so act character and color to your bends.

Be patient you haven't used these muscles before, and is will take time to strengthen. Keep practicing, and you'll get the hang of it eventually.

Bill McRea is the publisher of Guitar Warehouse the best place to Buy Guitar and learn Guitar Playing Techniques. It is also portable and the basic acoustic guitar is relatively cheaper than most musical instruments. Aside from being all of these things, the guitar also adds cool points to whoever carries and/or plays it. When a person can play guitar, he automatically turns into a pop star wannabe into a serious musician. When a person can play guitar, he becomes cooler than he actually is.

I bet you want to learn to play guitar right now. Or else you wouldn't be reading this in the first place.

The regular guitar has six strings. The top string, if you are right-handed, is called the 6th string. It is an E note. It is the thickest string and it produces the lowest sound. Next to it is the 5th string, an A note. The 4th string is a D, 3rd is a G note and 2nd is a B. The bottom string is the 1st string. It is the thinnest string and it produces the highest-pitched sound.

The strings run across the guitar's large body until the headstock, where the turning keys are found. The turning keys allow you to tune your guitar strings. The guitar's neck is the long, thin band that is attached to the body. In the neck, you can find the frets, or the metal strips that divide the neck into several sections. Musicians also refer to the space between these metal strips as frets.

Begin your guitar lessons by playing the strings "open," which means plucking without using the frets. Listen to the sounds you produce.

Now, hold down a string on a fret with the tip of your finger then try plucking that string. This is how you play an individual note. Try this with all frets and with all strings. Remember the sounds the strings make.

After you learn playing single notes, you can now move on to playing chords. Chords are combinations of two or more notes. Some chords involve the playing of three or more strings. This could be done by strumming.

Another important thing you have to study to be able to play guitar is the guitar tab. A guitar tab is a guitarist's guide. The tab looks like the guitar, with lines that represent strings. There are also numbers that instruct you to hold down specific frets while plucking a string.

Perfecting the art of guitar playing entails a lot of practice. Repeat playing single notes then move on to chords. Do this until you can confidently try to practice playing simple songs. Practice until you learn the string-fret combinations by heart.

Don't beat yourself up over the head when you don't get the song right the first time you try. Relax. Learning to play guitar would not be easy, but it should be fun.

STOP!

Breaking News at Jamorama

FREE Guitar Lessons jam packed with step by step instructions, tutorials, jam tracks and famous songs.

Learn to play like The Eagles, Green Day, Pink Floyd, Guns 'n Roses, Jimi Hendrix at Jamorama

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Bernice_Eker

Guitar Lessons

Learn Guitar Notes - Tips on How to Easily Learn to Play the Guitar

When trying to learn guitar notes one must figure out where to start. Interest in learning guitar has been drastically increased by the popularity of such games like rock band and guitar hero. As fun as these games are, they will not teach you how to play a real guitar. Below I have listed two huge tips that are not covered in the video games.

One of the one of the biggest tips I would give is to build hand strength. This plays heavily into learning to play the guitar. You especially want to work the hand that plays the chords; it is not uncommon for ones fingers to bleed when they haven't worked them enough and they go for a long play session.

Secondly, learn your chords and scales. As much as you could learn to play by ear you would be limiting your opportunities to play with others and limit the growth you can have. Quite often others will call out chords when playing in a group, if you don't know how to play by chord you will not be able to join in. Knowing your scales will allow you to more effectively play solos and will happen more often if you known them.

To learn guitar notes you need to take into account the above two tips, practice, preserver and above all have fun. Whether you try to teach yourself, take expensive private lessons or use a more affordable online course you are in for a very rewarding hobby...and who knows...maybe we'll see you backstage.

If you really want to Learn Guitar Notes or just want to find more information on guitar playing in general, visit My Site.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Brian_Bonsell

Guitar Lessons

Here is another guitar preview of mine. Well it is possible but there are 2 sets of skills you have to master. One is learning technique and the other is learning how to play over a chord progression. Other than that, there is no way around it.

The first step to learn lead guitar without scales is to be familiar with techniques. What are they? It encompasses all skills necessary for guitar solo performance. When we talk about technique, we are basically referring to skills like string bend, bend/release, natural harmonic, pinch harmonic, hammer-on, pull off, picking, right hand tapping, two handed tapping, tremolo picking, sweep picking, slide, vibrato, palm muting and others. These are basic skills which you can easily pick up by reading information online.

Another set of skills you have to learn is how to play over a chord progression. This is where many beginners go awfully wrong. They are often not shown the proper way to progress over chords. While they know how to use the right notes, they do not really know about progression. Playing each scale up and down repeatedly is definitely not considered as a "solo" act.

It all boils down to the music theory that beginners are taught. There is always a misperception that scales and chords are 2 entirely different entities. That is a huge myth! The answer to "how can one play over a chord progression" lies in simply playing the notes in the chord. Melodic solos consist of steps (not the entire scale) and leaps (skipping steps). Having a good understanding of this will make it clear why you can learn lead guitar without scales at all.

Now when you play chord tones through a progression, you will pick a tone for each and then decorate it by playing before and after. In this way, the lines are connected. As for non-chord tones, play it in a CAGED design or shape. Basically, all major scales can be easily broken down into 5 shapes on the fretboard. This lets you visualize better and able to perform the notes around tones.

As a start, you may want to play the root notes of a chord progression, followed by thirds and fifths. A good mix of tones which are blended with notes will set the stage for a cool melodic solo. Now you are in a better shape to play lead guitar without scales!

Pick up our free 5-part guitar learning course and learn how to play lead guitar like a skillful master guitarist.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Davion_Wong

Guitar Lessons

Playing Guitar Is Easy- If You Give Yourself A Chance

As a musical instrument, the guitar is one of the most popular and easy to play in the US. What other instrument will you almost always find around the campfire when people are singing, at concerts, and in a kid's bedroom? Because of it's popularity many people try to play it and fail. What they don't realize is that it is very simple and easy to learn. In reality most people start with the impression that they will immediately be able to play their favorite songs. They give themselves a disadvantage from the start with their high and unrealistic expectations.

The people that fail buy a guitar, play it for a week, find they're not progressing as fast as they expected and quit. I've seen several of my friends and family members do this, they didn't give themselves a chance to succeed. Even an experienced musician doesn't pick up and instrument and play it within several days. To play anything a person needs to understand the instrument, understand the music, and get their fingers used to the motions.

When you start playing guitar all you need to know is a few chords. It really is that simple. Pick several easy well known chords and practice them several times a day. You'll be surprised how many popular songs can be played with a few easy chords. If you'll only pick some chords, practice them for a week or two, you'll be able to play many of your favorite songs faster than you thought possible. But one thing you must not do is stress about the strumming pattern and any little riffs or extras you hear in the song. Just pick an easy strumming pattern and use it on all your songs. A good guitar player can play guitar well, a beginner plays beginner songs, you can't jump over the first step to get to the third.

Don't forget singing along with your guitar. For some people this takes a lot of practice, for others it's no sweat. When I was first learning to play guitar my boss at the time was also taking guitar lessons. Our teacher (we took lessons from the same place) started telling us to sing along at the same time. I got the hang of it a lot faster than my boss did. Although I do remember the first time I tried to sing along I went around in circles. And my teacher sat there and watched. :-( But I stuck with it, every time I played I sang along. My boss was a better player than me, but when it came to singing he attempted it half heartedly and I practiced and practiced it.

For anyone playing guitar whether they are talented or seem to have to practice a lot, simplifying and sticking with it is the most important part of playing. And don't try to learn by yourself, other people, books and taking lessons will help you a lot and give you the push you need.

Joe Natt runs a website dedicated to helping aspiring guitar players achieve their dreams. Also quite a bit of money can be made when you teach guitar as long as you have regular customers turning up. On the other side, many people are interested in learning to play the guitar nowadays, which makes guitar tutors high in demand.

You do not usually need a teaching qualification but you obviously do require some level of mastery of your instrument. Ok, so this is what you need to do to start you own teach guitar business:

1. Advertise your services in the local newspaper.

2. Put adverts up in your local newsagents.

3. Get some students and then you will automatically build a buzz and word of mouth.

4. When you have received some requests, find the right time for a lesson to suit both you and the student.

5. Have a guitar and an amplifier.

6. talk to your student about their playing ability and ask your student what he/she can play.

7. Start to teach guitar by showing scales slowly Pentatonic Scales and Major Scales are the two main ones.

8. Also, start by showing chords FROM the level the student is at and then as the student to play these chords.

9. Explain the theory related to any chords and scales. This is very important!

10. Give the student some notes at the end of the lesson to take home and practice

11. Ask he/she when would you like to return for your next lesson

12. Charge the student usually about £10-£15 for a half hour lesson and £20-£25 for a full hour lesson.

Always try to keep the student as long as possible and that is by giving them great tuition!

Created by Ameen Jabbar. The song may be your favorite song from your childhood heard over the radio or CD or TV or in a concert and might have been played by your favorite band.

Whatever be the nature of the song, the usual way of learning to play it is to buy the sheet music and read from it and practice it. But a superior method of learning a song is to learn it by the ear i.e. to learn by keenly listening to the song.

This technique can be applied to practically any type of song and all you need is a CD player to play it. The instrument used to replay the song does not really matter. It is a very useful skill that you need to develop if you are interested in making a career in music. The following paragraph gives a few tips for learning to play the guitar by the ear.

Tips for learning to play guitar by the ear

Training the ears to listen to the music carefully is the first step in learning to play guitar by the ear. Having an ear for music need not be an inborn quality alone but can be developed through practice. You can prepare your ears to pickup different features of the music. You have to learn to identify different chords in the music and the changes in them even as a song is played. You should be able to distinguish between the major and the minor chords.

A deep interest in the type of music that is being played helps in quickly learning its finer points. Tuning the guitar so that it matches with the song you want to play is the next step. This step requires a little practice and patience and individual string may have to be tuned to match each individual note of the song.

With these basic tips, you can learn to play the guitar by the ear through regular practice. It is not as hard as it sounds as.

James D. In fact, quite the opposite, the players who use the most varied technique and style within their metal framework are often the most interesting. That being said, there are a few key points that all metal players tend to stick to in general.

1) Write in a minor key

The vast majority of metal songs are written in a minor key and there is a very good reason for this. Quite simply, major keys often just sound too happy. Now again, that's not to say you can't write metal in a major key, it's been done and it can work, but overall, sticking to minor keys will give your songs that dark feel that most metal songs have.

2) Use pedal points

Pedal points are a favourite technique of metal players because they help push the rhythm sections along and allow for big accentuation on the chords. Listen to songs from just about any successful metal band and you'll find that they use pedal points or "chugging" or "galloping" extensively in their playing.

3) Up tempo songs tend to rule

This is far from a rule, and almost every good metal band has some down tempo songs or some ballads, but overall, faster tempos tend to lend themselves really well to the techniques a lot of metal players use, so you'll need to be able to keep your playing tight when the drummer starts to pick up the pace. Learning to synch your pick and fretting hand are crucial to succeed.

If you'd like to check out some lessons on techniques like this, as well as others, click here to check out Metal Method Guitar Lessons. They feel like still stand at the starting point and can't enjoy their playing. This mainly caused by most of them don't build up a strong foundation at the begining. I found that some of the guitar learners even just playing guitar for one to two years but are more better than so many that playing for over five years. This is the foundation problems. Me myself was an example when I started playing guitar long time ago.

The secrets of learning guitar are mostly base on the foundation. To have a good foundation for future success,we need three important factors :-

1.Listening:

Ear training is a MUST basic training that every guitar learner should have. But most of them avoid this as quite a boring and time-consuming job. Without a good listening, we are unable to move to higher level.
To overcome this problems, I suggest that guitar learners may choose one of the well known Ear Training software on internet. I found that there are few really good software that will improve your listening step by step and really FUN. You feel like playing game when you learn.

2.Daily practice: (Both fingers and ears)

Daily practice is another important thing we should do.(Ex.fingers exercises, practice for the basic scales)
I suggest that beginners practice PENTATONIC SCALES at the starting point because this scales are the most simple scales that only have 5 tones. Try to practice 20 to 30 minutes daily. Remember that even just 20 minutes of RELAX and CONCERNTRATION DAILY practice is more effective than few hours of unconstant practice.

3.Look for a teacher:

You may find either private guitar teacher or guitar lessons on internet. For my opinions, learn guitar from internet maybe better because of the convinience of time and cheaper. There is just one question of learning from internet that what lessons to choose, what lessons are really work.
Myself as a guitar lover have been playing guitar for 15 years.

I do the research on guitar lessons from internet over 5 years for myself and my groups. I've spent a lot of money for it. Recently I just built up my own little web page telling guitar lovers a few good guitar lessons that really work and would like to share with all of you.

If you are interested to learn guitar, please visit my website at
www.geocities.com/bestguitarlessons/bestguitarlessons.html and look at it yourself.

Regards,

Don Lee

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Don_Lee

Guitar Lessons

Play Guitar - Proper Method To Use To Reach Your Goals

Successfully learning how to play guitar is within the grasp of most people, yet many beginners
give up too quickly. To sum up what we have discussed about guitar playing so far we can say that when
you know what you want to accomplish and when it will be accomplished it is much easier to select a
proper method to use to reach your goals.

Sohel Katir

http://www.i-need-money-fast.com

If you are looking for quality information on "i need money fast" and in particular on the products, please visit the above site

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Soli_Kator

Guitar Lessons

The Theory About Guitar

I'll never forget it. Several years ago I was on my way to see KISS in concert (first time seeing them with makeup, I might add) with a good friend of mine. She was interested in music as I was; she had taken piano lessons for ten years or so. Inevitably the conversation during the drive turned to music...all different aspects of it.

We got to the subject of what exactly music instrument lessons really teach you, and I asked her a very simple theory question: "What is the chord spelling for a minor chord?" (in case you are wondering, the answer is 1, flat 3, 5...more on this in later articles).

I was shocked to find out that she had absolutlely NO idea what I was talking about.

I tried to explain to her the basic theory behind this question, but see seemed to get more confused as we went. I just could not understand how someone that had taken lessons for ten years could not have the slightest inclination as to what she was playing. She stated "all I ever was taught was how to read music - what notes on the page corresponds to what key on the piano".

This simple conversation had shown me how important it was to at least have some sort of understanding of basic music theory. I know...there are many, many guitar players and musicians out there that are perfectly happy with their level of knowledge ( my brother-in-law has been trying to learn guitar for the past year simply to be a chick-magnet).

I guess my point is this: going beyond the chord books and scale charts and guitar tab and standard music notation is this living, breathing "thing" that you can't really appreciate until you "get into it". I have found that once you get the urge to develop more knowledge about theory, it can be hard to stop. Granted, everyone has a level where they are comfortable...but you would be doing yourself and your music a dis-service by not trying to get to that point. It kind of struck me as sad that I would never be able to jam with my friend and be able to yell out "follow me - play a 1-4-5 12 bar blues in 'E'".

Do I know or claim to know everything about theory? Absolulely not...but I am comfortable with the level I am at. I can sit in with any rock back and hold my own. Now jazz on the other hand...I know I would have to do some work. But you know what? That's OK!

By the way (just in case you were wondering)...the concert was AWESOME!!!

Jerry Mathis has 25 years of guitar experience - playing, teaching, recording and performing live. It used to be that I would practice at least two hours every day, and sometimes much, much longer.

It's hard to really pinpoint the reason for this gradual change of behavior. I could blame it on the fact that I have some nerve damage in my elbow which causes my left arm and hand to ache whenever I play the guitar these days. Or perhaps it's because I've been so busy working on my website, writing blogs, teaching guitar, and taking care of other responsibilities that it's just hard to find the time.

As a guitar player there really is no excuse. Slacking off on my guitar practice is the reason I was caught off guard not too long ago when I received a request to play for a local radio program. The call came one evening while I was in the middle of giving guitar lessons. Normally, I wouldn't even answer the phone during this time, but for some reason I did. It was the producer of the radio program. I was told that he had gotten my name from another musician I know. He had learned that I was a guitar player and asked me if I would be willing to play a little "Spanish" guitar for a show he was going to air the following day. Said it wouldn't have to be anything special and that he only needed about 30 seconds of music.

Well, my student was in the music room waiting for me, so I told him I would have to call him back. After the lesson was over, I began rationalizing why I could not possibly play guitar for this man's radio show. Afterall, he hadn't really given me enough notice and I, "the guitar player", just wasn't prepared. I didn't even know what kind of Spanish music he had in mind, or where I had filed my Spanish music. He probably wanted Flamenco music anyway, and I hadn't played any of that for quite awhile. Besides, my arm had been bothering me a lot and...

When my husband got home I told him about the call. He thought I should do it. I agreed to, at least, see if I could find some music that might be appropriate for the show. We went into the music room together and started paging through my books. After several minutes, I finally found something I "used to know."

Putting the sheet music up on the music stand, I reluctantly pulled up my guitar and started to plunk through the material. After a short time, the pieces were beginning to come together and even sound fairly decent. We decided to time what I had put together. Exactly 30 seconds!

Well, I called the producer back and agreed to let him hear what I had to offer. I told him that I thought it would be best for him to make the final decision as to whether I was the guitar player he wanted to use on his show or not. The next day he came over and recorded me in one take! That was a great relief.

I guess several things can be learned from this experience. Let me share some of my thoughts with you as one guitar player to another.

If you ever find yourself in a similiar situation:

Don't be too quick to say no to a request.

Even if you feel unprepared, you might have material to pull from that is familiar enough to brush up on in a pinch.

Responding to a last minute request can show a measure of professionalism.

Being willing to help others is a way to create good public relations and possibly lead to other opportunities in the future.

Being stretched beyond what you thought was possible is one way to know that you are growing as a musician.

Life is like a song, so let's put it to music!

FREE Reprint Rights - You may publish this article in your e-zine or on your web site as long as you include the following information:

Kathy Unruh is a singer/songwriter and webmaster of ABC Learn Guitar. The two most common instruments that parents let children learn are the piano and the guitar.

Learning how to play the guitar in years past and now isn’t that different. The first thing needed is to obtain one; if there is already an instrument available then learning can begin. If one needs to purchase one, then going to the music store with somebody who is familiar with guitars will really helping the selection

The most important thing to know before playing any musical instrument was learning how to read the notes, but today this is not considered to be enough. The person needs to listen as he is playing to know whether or not he is producing the correct notes.

In the past, an instructor had to be found before lessons could begin; but now a person can simply start by learning from friends and then practicing. After some time, the assistance of a professional can help advance your knowledge of playing the guitar.

There are also books that teach a person how to play the guitar. By reading and studying the latest techniques of the popular musicians, one will be able to learn a trick or two when playing.

The internet can also help improve one’s skill with the guitar. There are many websites available that give tips from a beginner’s stage to the more advanced lessons.

Instructional videos are also available. Some were produced by rock stars and each of these individuals have or use a different technique.

The best technique that can be used to check your progress is by playing the guitar at the same time as the same song is playing in the background. That way, if you are playing “off key”, adjustments can be made until it is perfected.

Technology and the publication of books have really helped change the way people can learn how to play the guitar. With the many options available, anyone who has the desire can start at any age and at any time. But learning the basics first before moving on to other things is essential.

Guitar playing should be fun. It is not just about learning how to play the instrument but enjoying it as well. Not everyone is born to do play it well. So if after some time, it’s really not working for you, then giving it up for another musical instrument might be the answer.

Bill McRea is the publisher of Guitar Warehouse the best place to Buy Guitar and learn Guitar Playing Techniques. The modules are usually designed by guitarists that have already found success in music and are now trying to provide some useful tips to beginner guitar players. There are both advantages and disadvantages if you want to learn guitar fast online.

The Good

Many of us don't necessarily want to learn to play the guitar like pros. They just want to learn a few chords to play at campfires and impress their friends or family with their music playing skills. These people are not interested in investing time and money into a more complete learning program, such as private guitar lessons. For them, being able to learn guitar fast online is a great thing.

Even if you would like to learn how to play the guitar well, you might not have the time and resources to do it. If you have a job, a family and various errands to run every day, traveling back and forth to guitar classes might not be for you. Being able to learn guitar fast by practicing whenever you find some free time without having to leave the house is a good thing.

Online lessons are often more dynamic and successful in keeping you focused than a theory book. They usually include graphics, animated images and demo sounds to make it easier for you to learn. If you get stuck, you usually can ask the guitarist providing those lessons for help.

And last, but not least, online guitar lessons are very inexpensive, sometimes even free. In contrast, private lessons are often expensive and you have to pay per hour. Not everyone wants to invest so much money into learning to play the guitar.

The Bad

As tempted as you might be to learn guitar fast online, you have to consider the drawbacks as well. If you are serious about playing the guitar, nothing compares to a good teacher. Online lessons can only provide a standard teaching program, while a teacher can tailor his/her method on your learning style.

Online lessons can not actually focus on your particular learning needs. You might want to focus more on certain aspects, but a teaching program is standard and tries to respond to the needs of average guitar players. In contrast, a private teacher will give you personal attention and respond to your specific needs.

With online lessons, no one will applaud you when you're progressing and get you motivated. A private teacher can provide you with positive feedback and knows how to increase your motivation when necessary.

Finally, you might be making some mistakes you won't even notice and end up playing badly. With online lessons, no one will be there to correct them. A private teacher will spot your mistakes fast and correct them in time before they turn into long-term habits.

If you want to truly learn to play the guitar well, it might be better to dedicate a little more time and work to the learning process. However, for many people who don't want to become superstars or don't have the time to do it, the opportunity to learn guitar fast online is actually great.

Article by Peggy Hoeben http://www.jamorama.infortool.com

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Peggy_Hoeben

Guitar Lessons

Make a Game of Your Guitar Practice and Surprise Yourself

So you want to be improve your guitar playing?

Well, like any thing, guitar skill progress takes time and practice, but many of us have much difficulty practicing regularly because it is so easy to let other things take priority over our guitar lessons.

First, you need to absolutely make up your mind that you want to improve your guitar playing and then make sure that your progress is truly is a priority for you.

Make a list of the most important things that you need to focus on in your life right now and honestly assess where guitar fits into your list.

Ideally, you want to be engaged in a guitar lesson for at least an hour a day in order to make any significant progress.

However, you may have to conclude that at this point you are not going to be able to devote even an hour a week to the task.

If that is the case, try to spend some casual time reading guitar-related publications or listening to your favorite guitarists to nurture your love of the music. When your priorities change and you have more time, you will then at least still have a strong interest in becoming as good a guitarist as you can. Listening to Eric Clapton or other greats will only kindle your interest and may even cause you to reprioritize your guitar lessons.

Once you see where your guitar practice fits in with the rest of your life, make a true appointment with yourself. Put your practice into your schedule. Get it in your planner or it won't get done!

Okay, now that you are regularly spending time with your beloved guitar, what should you do?

First, make sure it is quality time. Don't have the television on or be hanging out with friends. Then, make sure you are working on skills that you need to sharpen.

If you spend time strumming popular solos and cranking up your amplifier, you may have some fun, but you will not improve your skills.

Think about the chords and scales that you struggle with. Grade yourself on them on a scale (no pun intended) of 1 to 10 and then re-evaluate every week or so. Re-grading every practice or guitar lesson is not appropriate because it is unfair to measure progress that frequently.

No one improves in a straight line. You may hit a certain chord great one day and then have two of the strings sound very unclear the next day. However, if you work diligently you will make progress when measured every couple weeks or so.

Do the same thing with scales and even notes depending on your current skill level.

Once you have a way of measuring your progress, you will be inspired to continue with your regular practice regimen and guitar lessons.

As an advanced step, after you have made progress with a certain group of chords and scales, you should find a song you like that uses many of those elements and work on that as a way of applying your improved ability.

This can be very rewarding.

You may even want to start with the song and work backwards, but make sure that you do spend a great deal of time on the fundamentals before you get serious about the song.

The key to all this is regular consistent work and a measurement of results. Achieve this, and you will enjoy your practice time more and more. Challenge yourself to be at a certain grade by a specific time.

Make a game of your practice efforts and you will surprise yourself!

Jeremiah Thompson is an amateur guitar player and true lover of the instrument and its rich sounds. In this world with all kinds of styles of music and bands, finding someone to teach you what you really dream of playing is kind of tough. One person may be more into jazz, one more into rock, one more into blues. It all depends on the individual.

Have you ever had a guitar lesson that just seemed to never end. Your teacher kept going on and on about stuff you never really wanted to learn anyways? A good guitar lesson should be about teaching you to develop what you are passionate about. If you’re not passionate about classical guitar styles, then why learn them?

Don’t get me wrong a good guitarist is well-versed. This means they can play a variety of styles. But let’s be real. The majority of us just want to just pick up a guitar and PLAY! We don’t want guitar lesson after guitar lesson of boring theory and stuff that doesn’t really help us PLAY!

Anyways, finding the right guitar lesson should be more about finding what YOU like. If you want to play rock music, find a rock guitarist to teach you. If you want to play jazz, find a jazz guitarist. If you want to play classical guitar, then get you some classical lessons.

Guitar is one of the easiest and best instruments to get started on. It’s a matter of learning a few chords and going from there. The problem is finding a teacher who’ll give you a good guitar lesson that doesn’t include all the stuff that really doesn’t matter when it comes down to just playing a song.

It may be hard to find free guitar lessons. Most teachers won’t offer free guitar lessons. If you can find one that’s great. I recommend finding an online alternative if you’re just itching to get started.

I’ve seen some good online sites come and go. If you can find a good online guitar lesson site that is inexpensive you’re doing well! Why? Because you can learn at your own pace and learn what you want to learn.

Information about these sites can be found at any search engine and most offer nice programs. Some are even membership based. My suggestion is to decide what it is exactly that you want to accomplish with your playing and then choose the program that’s good for you.

Many of these sites offer comprehensive chord lessons and finger-picking technique courses that will enhance your skills as you progress. They also offer chord sheets and finger placement charts as well. You should be able to download a small application or set of pdfs/docs that include all this info, if the site is set up well.

Free Guitar Lessons

Russ plays guitar, piano, drums, and trumpet. But they are important, and for a good reason. It is much easier to play the guitar if your technique is correct and efficient. The following guidelines will make it so much easier to learn the guitar without the difficulties associated with poor technique.

When you hold your guitar, place the body on your right leg, and the neck in your left hand. You should hold the pick in your right hand, between your thumb and your index finger only. 9 out of 10 of my new students have a tendency to want to hold their pick with both their index and middle fingers opposing the thumb. It usually takes me weeks to break that habit, so don’t start now!

In addition, be careful not to be chasing the neck of your guitar. Try to hold it so that the headstock is about at chest level. Hold the guitar close against your body and keep it under your control at all times.

If you haven’t already noticed, there are six strings on your guitar. The one closest to you, it should also be the thickest, is number 6. It is also the lowest string in terms of pitch on the guitar, so we also call it the low, or bottom string. The first string is also the top string and is the skinniest one on your guitar. If you have a classical guitar, it may not actually be the skinniest, but it should be the highest in pitch unless your guitar is really out of tune. The art and science of tuning is a whole other animal.

Now, let’s take the pick and pluck the first string. That’s called playing the string “open.” Now pluck the second string open, then the third string open. You’ve just played your first 3 notes on the guitar! I know, it doesn’t sound like much yet, but we have to start somewhere.

Your fingers are numbered 1 through 4, with your index finger being number 1, your middle finger being number 2, your ring finger is 3, and your pinky is 4. Now that you know how to play the first string open, let’s push down on the string with your first finger right behind the first fret. If you don’t remember, the frets are the small metal rails that go across the neck. There should be anywhere from 18 – 22 of them depending on the length of your guitar. Pluck the first string with the pick to make it sound.

The trick here is to push as close to the fret as possible without being on top of it. If you are on top of the fret, the note may sound muffled. If you’re too far away, or don’t push down hard enough, you’ll hear a buzzing sound instead of a nice, clear note.

Now try pushing down on the first string at the second fret and pluck the first string. Finally, push with your third finger on the third fret, and pluck the first string. When you push down on the second or third fret, it doesn’t matter whether or not you’re still pushing on either the first or second fret. Whatever fret is closest to the soundhole or pickups is the one that you’re going to hear.

Try pushing down on one of the first four frets on various strings to hear what they sound like and get the feel for how hard you have to push. You might be surprised at how easy it is. Remember that you always use your first finger for notes on the first fret, second finger for notes on the second fret, third finger for notes on the third fret, and your pinky will eventually get used for the fourth fret notes. It might be tough right now, but you'll get stronger.

Always remember these basic techniques as you learn more about how to play the guitar. These are things that even seasoned professionals have to remind themselves of periodically, and things that can turn an arduous task into one of enjoyment and fun.

Griff Hamlin is a professional guitarist and teacher with 20 years of teaching, touring, and recording experience.
